The shipping company FRS Iberia have just bought a fast ferry off a Japanese company, which will ply the Motril-North Africa ferry line.
The vessel is a catamaran design, 85 metres in length, which will be rechristened, Levante Jet. It was built in Australia in 2015 (Incat Shipyard, Tasmania) and can reach a speed of 40 knots.
As for transporting capacity, it can load 692 passengers and 151 vehicles or alternatively a capacity for 330 lineal metres of cargo.
Thanks to its latest generation Caterpillar engines and its catamaran hull, its fuel consumption is much reduced compared to a conventional ferry of a similar loading capacity.
The ferry, which used to belong to the Japanese company, Sado Kisen, has a cafeteria, a shop, wifi, a kiddies’ play area and one for pets, too.
The ferry should arrive at Algerciras (Cádiz) from Japan in August, where it will be reconditioned and painted with the company colours.
