Salobreña Stray Cat Course

As part of the Salobreña's Environmental Volunteers Programme there is a course of how to manage stray-cat colonies.

SAL Cat Course OnLFor the last two years a group of volunteers has been looking after the different stray-cat colonies around the municipality; providing them with food, for example.

The course consists of classes on animal welfare and managing these colonies, including tracking illness within groups of cats, especially those that could cause problems for humans within their vicinity.

There’s also the subject of what food to give them, as in most cases people tend to give them leftovers which are not always good for cats.

The Councillor for the Environment, Ángel Coello, explained that the ‘cat carers’ would check on the food being left by neighbours, as well as apply population control through castration.

The Department of the Environment has hired the services of Asociación Jarela, to cover vaccinations, disinfection and chipping the animals. The association will also to find homes for the strays.
