Slow Vaccination Progress

There is a frustrating lack of available vaccines in most Granada health districts; they're just not arriving as they should.

GRA Eldery Vaccinated Jabs FB21Shipments of Pfizer and Moderna, are the most effective but also the ones that are being held up in the drive to vaccinate over 80s who are residents of care homes.

This week the province is due to receive around 9,000 doses of Pfizer, which will all go to those that have already received their first jab and are awaiting the next and final one.

The problem is that with the vaccines received to date they have only been able to inoculate 35% of this group, which comprises of some 56,500 people.

The plan was to have them all vaccinated between the last week of last month and the first week of March, but that has obviously fallen far short of the mark. Unfortunately, the rest of March is not going to differ much from what has already passed.

The Andalusia Health Board has given up trying to get the first shot to more people and is now just concentrating on giving the second one to those who have already received one. This means that the campaign to cover the over 80s group will not be complete before mid April, according to the Minister of Public Health, Jesús Aguirre.

The Junta hopes that the roll out will improve next month with a greater flow of doses arriving.

Michael: Thank you for your response and for your encouragement 😉

I’m 64 and am waiting for them to work their way through the over 80s, then the over 70s and then… at last, my age group. I don’t really care which vaccine I receive because they are all apple and pairs when it comes to comparison. I am hoping that either the EU gets through to approving AZ to over 55s or the Russian, Chinese or the Johnson & Johnson (US) versions are accepted and available in Spain. As long as it’s not bleach, as reportedly suggested by a certain gentleman…, I really don’t mind what “flag” it is flying.

The entire aim of the article was for people, like me, who are waiting for news on when they will be called for a jab.One thing is for sure, the EC is not doing a very good job about getting vaccines to the member states.

Thank you again for that link, Michael.

    Hello Martin,
My comment was focused only on “ Shipments of Pfizer and Moderna, are the most effective” as it depends in which sense. They are certainly more effective in Spain for older members of the population since the AZ vaccine is being restricted to younger individuals. However if it refers to the efficacy of the vaccines to wider populations the statement is questionable.
Nevertheless keep up the good work at Seaside Gazette

Michael & John: OK, the article is about a lack of vaccine doses in Granada. It does not mention, and let me emphasise this, whose fault this may be. It does not say that it is the EU’s fault, or even the Central Government’s fault or that of the Regional Government. It only says that there is a lack of available vaccines in Granada.

Furthermore it deals only with the vaccination programme for the over 80s, and the only two vaccine types being used for this age group are Pfizer and Moderna, as – for what ever reason, rightly or wrongly – the AZ vaccine has not been approved for people of that age group.

Therefore it is puzzling – but not surprising, given the nature of social-media exchanges – that accusations of “fake news” and ” finding a headline to suit a narrative” are levied.

The majority of Seaside Gazette readers are over 50 and in many cases, in their 60s and 70s, and want to know when they will be getting their jabs. The article explains that the Junta’s programme is suffering set backs.

I sincerely thank you both for information contained in your comments, as I am very sure that readers will be very interested in reading it.

As always anyone can find a headline to suit a narrative. In this case it is the below. However the headline leaves out so many variables. In this case it is a narrow 28-34 day window analysis and doesn’t take into account what happens after second dosages and also long term effectiveness.

    To quote the survey

’emphasised that the study should not be used to compare the two vaccines as the study had not been set up to look at differences between them, was not randomised, follow-up was longer for people who received the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine because it was approved first, and the two vaccines were given to different patient populations.’

    https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-preprint-from-scotland-looking-at-hospitalisations-in-scotland-and-vaccinations/

At 28-34 days after the first vaccine dose, hospitalisations were reduced by 85% in those who had received the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and by 94% in those that had received the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.

There is a frustrating lack of available vaccines

Pfizer and Moderna, are the most effective

This is fake news, according to studies conducted in Scotland the AZ is more effective then Pfizer-BioNTech.
