Salobreña Town Hall has managed to obtain 20,715 euros towards a project for a compost plant for domestic waste worth 37,739 euros.
Councillor for the Environment, Ángel Coello, explained that it was a “pioneering” project within Andalucía, designed to reduce waste, which gives a double benefit: natural fertiliser (compost) from the town, and a reduction in domestic rubbish that normally goes through the system each day.
The project comes in two stage: find out from old-town residents what they know about compost; i.e. what materials can be used; launch a campaign to heighten awareness about the importance of the project and the benefits for residents and the town’s economy.
To achieve this compost bins will have to be placed around the old town as well as the central plant where to generation of compost will take place. The first step will be to find technical assistance to form a network of volunteers.
