The province of Granada registered its first three Covid deaths of 2021 bringing the total of people who have died from the virus in the province to 1,050.
In Andalucía, like the rest of the regions in Spain, the contagion figure has begun to climb after the Christmas/New Year celebrations.
The Central and regional governments were all warned that slackening restrictions over the Christmas period would exasperate the situation and probably lead to imposing damaging counter measures, starting within the first ten days of January but contrary to common sense, these warnings from medical experts were ignored in favour of stimulating the flagging economy in the hospitality sector.
On a positive note, Granada finished the year with only five Covid cases in residencies for the elderly, thanks to the emphasis on prioritising vaccinations there. The total number of cases in these residencies was 17 but 12 of them are staff members and not residents.
Tomorrow the Gazette will be publishing the weekly figures, as usual.
