The Guardia Civil in Cantabria arrested a teenage driver for driving a car without the knowledge nor permission from the owner, on at least two occasions. Neither did he have a driving licence.
It was at the beginning of the month that a car owner went to the Guardia Civil post in Los Corrales de Buelna to report that a young adult had been using his car without his permission. He explained how, on the 2nd of December, when he came out of work he had seen somebody driving off in his car. He tried running after the car but had to give up the chase and went back into work.
About a couple of hours later he saw that his car had reappeared and was parked where he had originally parked it. He approached the car and saw a youth getting out, who ran off upon seeing him.
But, he later found that it wasn’t the first time that the joyrider had allegedly ‘borrowed’ his car, as the day before he had reportedly done the same, even, thoughtfully, having put more petrol in the car before returning it.
The car owner always parks his car in the same space outside his place of work… with his keys in it.
To cut a long story short, the Guardia Civil, using the description given by the car owner, were later able to identify the 18-year-old suspect and arrest him.
This habit of borrowing the victim’s car was not done to carry out any criminal activity but simply to have a car to use for a few hours, always returning it in the same state in which he found it. For this reason, the suspect has been charged with unauthorised use of a vehicle and an offence against road safety.
