Shoppers at Salobreña’s Mercadona were surprised to see smoke billowing down the street that runs past its main entrance.
First reports around noon spoke of a vehicle fire within the supermarket’s top parking area but it soon proved to be incorrect as it was a SUV parked on Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez.
The emergency services were called out around 12.30h because of a parked vehicle with the engine area on fire. The Policía Local upon arrival began by getting the other parked vehicles off the said street to avoid them being damaged.
In the meantime, the Motril fire service quickly put it out whilst the municipal police also kept traffic out of the street – that time of day this area has a lot of wheeled traffic as well as pedestrians heading to the bus station on the other side of the main road. The town having only the Pontanilla as an access and exit point, as there was a check-point in place, didn’t help things, either.
