The area of Almuñécar known as the Loma del Gato, which is above Taramay and borders on Itrabo, saw a brush fire on Monday, close to the A-7 autovía.

The fire – far from being the first recently up there – threatened nearby cortijos owing to gusting winds, but the fire services managed to control and put it out, but not before burning an area of five hectares.

The fire services were also helped by property owners who, too, fought to keep the flames away from their homes

The emergency number, 112, received an alert from neighbours around 14.30h and dispatched the Guardia Civil, Policia Local as well as the Almuñécar fire service. The local fire service was assisted by an Infoca aircraft, as well as Infoca units on the ground.
