A small fire broke out amongst weeds and dry grass next to an A-7 viaduct over the Río Verde Valley on Saturday the 29th. Although it was put out, on several occasion it sprang back to life owing to strong winds.
The fire started around 06.00h under the viaduct next to Torrecuevas; i.e., this was the bridge where six construction workers lost their lives when it collapsed in November 2005.
Councillor for Citizen Safety, Francisco Robles Rivas, informed that the fire also affected nearby subtropical plantations, although the majority of the damage was the grass and brush.
.
“Whilst at first the fire seemed of little importance, things got complicated when the flames revived on several occasions, threatening nearby agricultural land, principally, avocado trees,” he explained.
He also said that around 17.00h an Infoca ground unit joined the local fire service because a helicopter could not be used to carry out water bombing owing to several high-tension cables in the area.
