Believe it or not but there is a national association of grandparents; it’s called the Asociación de Abuelos y Abuelas de España (ABUESPA). This association has made an appeal to the younger generation calling on them to be responsible when it comes to Covid-19 measures.
We’re not only referring to “grandchildren” but anybody, no matter their age; we ask them to keep in mind that we, the grandparents, have helped them reach this point in their lives; be it 16, 18 or 20 years old,” explained the association Chairperson, Francisco Muñoz.
He went on to say that their parents and grandparents didn’t go amiss with their education, the younger generation must realise that the elderly are their responsibility now: “they must think, I am not going to infect my granddad or grandma.”
He said that their members are seeing that growth in infections is mostly coming from the night-club scene, or when groups of youngsters meet up in the evening or on beaches.. “You see 20 or 25 adolescents and teenagers grouping together, going for swims together, larking about, just as people of their age have always done,” said, Sr. Muñoz.
“It just takes one of them to have the virus and within days half of them are infected… and in the meantime they have been spending time with their grandparents,” he explained.
He concluded by pointing out that whereas for the youngsters in question, it will be like having a heavy cold for a few days and then they will get over it, but for the grandparent, it’s a single ticket to the afterlife.
