A 49-year-old, Argentinean man has been arrested by the police in Vélez-Málaga for allegedly swindling an elderly woman out of 1,891 euros.
The accused befriended the 87-year-old woman and when she was hospitalised was left in charge of her home. It was a state social worker who had been looking after her until she was hospitalised who raised the voice of alarm.
The victim’s bankcard had been used on several occasions whilst she was in hospital after suffering a fall. The woman has no relatives in Spain so it was a neighbour (the accused) who offered to keep an eye on the house, water the plants, etc.
The Policía Nacional looked into the cash withdrawals and saw that they had all been carried out whilst she was in hospital and that only the arrested man had access to the house where the bankcard was kept.
Checking the CCTV footage of the cashpoints where the money was withdrawn at the time of the withdrawals quickly concluded the investigation, ending with his arrest.
