A water-supply pipe belonging to the Axaragua utility company burst in Vélez-Málaga yesterday morning with a loss of 500,000 litres of mains water.
The water, which is brought down from La Viñuela reservoir, ruptured the pipe between the filtering plant, El Trapiche and one of Vélez-Málaga’s principal water-supply tanks.
The section of pipeline had only been repaired a couple of days ago but when it was put online again it ruptured leading to this massive loss of the town’s domestic water supply. More water would have been lost had an automatic shut-off system not cut the supply upon detecting the sudden loss of pressure.
It’s hard to calculate judging by the accompany photo and video footage but the force of the water pushed up a 30-metre high geyser of water before subsiding.
According to the utility company, the damaged pipe (which is under repair again) should not affect the town’s water supply as the back-up pipe to the water tank is being used.
