Motril’s Plans for Bars

MOT Plaza de Tranvia 02Motril plans to open its bars in a few days time, not completely but rather in order to serve take-away tapas and raciones.

Mayor Luisa García Chamorro announced this new measure to help the sector get back on its feet, which lets them sell prepared food if ordered beforehand. In other words, you can’t just turn up and ask for something. This is to avoid people gathering outside the establishments.

She promised that they weren’t going to allow any of the town’s bars go under if they could avoid it. Furthermore, bars and restaurants will not have to pay for their terrace-seating space.

According to Mayor, allowing bars etc to do this does not contravene the Decree issued by the Central Government because it permits eating establishments to take phone orders and not only deliver the food, but also for customers to come and collect it.

However, there is still no start date for this although the Mayor says that it will be “presently,” just as soon as they have finished drawing up the requirements for providing and ordering take-away food under such conditions.

Both Almuñécar and Motril have asked Costas to forego the leasing fee that chiringuitos have to pay each year for occupying land under their authority. This could mean that each chiringuito could save up to 15,000 euros. This waiver would be for every business (not only chiringuitos) that operates on beaches, such as those that hire out sun loungers or pedaloes, for example.
