One of the activities brought to a halt during this present health crisis has been the work on the Nerja sewage-treatment plant.

It’s not only a question of health but of funding as the Central Government, which is financing the project, is heavily overspending elsewhere to combat the situation.

After total inactivity for over two week, this week work was to recommence near the Mirador del Bendito.

The company that is to carry out the work will have to sink a 17-metre-deep borehole on the floor of a pit that is already 8-metres deep. This is necessary to reach a pipe that was placed beneath the cliffs behind Burriana Beach five years ago.

Whilst this is happening more workers from the company (Lantania) are working in the same area reconnecting interrupted services on nearby streets.

As for the main sewage-treatment building next to the N-340, they’re still waiting for the power to be connected up – at the moment the supply is a temporary one needed for the construction process.

Last October it was announced that the construction work should be completed within eight months, which would be followed by another six months of trials, so we’re talking about it coming onto line at the beginning of next year.

So, in the meantime, would the residents of Nerja please stay away from eating prunes…
