Almuñécar Medics Back

ALM Medical Centre SignThe twelve medical workers that went down with Coronavirus at the Almuñécar Medical Centre have now returned to work as they have been cleared of the infection.

Almuñécar became the first town in the province to report cases of infection; five medical workers had shared the same car coming across from Málaga, where they had been attending a medical conference on Pneumology around the end of February.

Before long, another seven workers went down with it because the original five were contagious even though they still weren’t showing symptoms.

The Almuñécar Medical Centre has a staff of 16 GPs, four Paediatricians and two Pharmacists. The centre provides coverage for Jete, Otívar, La Herradura and Torrecuevas.

In total 62 medical workers have been infected on the Costa Tropical and the Alpujarra; the two areas included in our comarca. As far as the health division for the whole of southern Granada (Área Sur) there are 1,200 medical staff, 30% of whom have been tested so far.

Almuñécar was the only medical centre within the Área Sur that had to be temporarily closed down. Two other towns in Granada also reported cases of medical staff being infected: Órgiva and Salobreña but they were not closed down. The Salobreña case had recently been transferred over from Almuñecar.
