Five people; three adults and two children, were injured when their car drove off a country lane that connects El Cerval and Rescate above La Herradura with the N-340. The children are aged three and one.
The accident occurred around 19.00h yesterday evening when the 4×4 left the tarmacked lane and turned over, landing upside down amongst the trees of a tropical-fruit plantation.
Dogs at a nearby cortijo heard the crash and kept up a tirade of barking, which alerted the cortijo owner to what had happened. She had gone outside to see what was making them bark and saw the upturned car and heard a woman shouting for help.
The cortijo owner immediately phoned 112 and reported the accident and before long the fire service, Guardia Civil, municipal police and ambulances arrived at the scene.
The rescue took a while as one of the occupants was trapped and required the assistance of the fire personnel. Three ambulances were need to take those injured to the Almuñécar medical centre.
