Ismail Fernández from Salobreña finds travelling very difficult owing to his cerebral paralasis but that doesn’t stop him.
What does stop him is when Ryanair turns round and tells him his wheelchair is too big to fit in the hold. This happened at Luton Airport as he was preparing to return from his holidays there with his sister. They had flown out from Málaga Airport using the same company only days earlier with no problems whatsoever.
According to Ryanair in Luton, Málaga had committed an error by letting him fly out with it.
Ismail told them that the chair folded down but they were having none of it. His chair measured 90 cm in height and as he points out, there are suitcase that are higher if stood on end. The max height that Ryanair permits is 81 cm, it seems. If they had let him recline the back of the chair, it would have been lower, but they were adamant.
He says he felt completely humiliated being turned back at the boarding gate in front of everybody. Luton Airport was more considerate than Ryanair and found him a flight the next day, but with Easyjet.
Editorial Comment: It is strange how Ryanair always has plenty of room in the hold for all that hand luggage that they will find any excuse to take off you and place there… but there was no room for a wheelchair…
