A whole host of politicians and ex-politicians from Nerja, including the present Mayor, are coming up before the judge over the untreated sewage that gets pumped into the sea.
Operación Vastum, which began in 2017, was a police investigation into the dumping of untreated sewage waste into the sea off Nerja beaches because residents of the said township were having to pay a special levy on their water bills for non-existent sewage treatment. It was the ecologist organisation, Ecologistas en Acción, who brought it to their attention.
In fact, the ecologists pointed out that there were actually three towns with over 15,000 inhabitants who were dumping untreated sewage either into the sea, or down gullies, in the case of inland municipalities: Coín, Nerja y Alhaurín el Grande.
The first to appear is the Mayor, José Alberto Armijo (PP), who was also the Mayor of Nerja between 1995 and 2015. Next is the Councillor for Urban Development and Housing, Mari Nieves Atencia (PP) who used to be the Councillor for The Environment between 2011 and 2015.
