Market Square to be Mirador

SAL Market Wall RepairedThe Salobreña Town Hall is working on the details of turning the Plaza del Antiguo Mercado into a mirador (lookout or elevated viewing point). Residents of many years will remember the original market there.

Funds from the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa Tropical were used to both resurface the street and improve public lighting there (replacing standard light bulbs with LED systems).

The old retaining wall will be demolished – its present state is a possible danger to the public – and new railings will be set up. The square in general will see new green areas and the parking arrangement there will be reorganised. Finally, the over-head cabling will be buried in order to improve the view.

All this work will be carried out in stages by municipal maintenance crews without bringing in outside companies.

The Mayor, María Eugenia Rufino, said that this project lies within the general improvement to the old town and will also include a mural, converting the square into a spot of touristic interest.

This is good news for the tourists and locals alike. A shame that more surrounding paths and routes in and out of the main resorts, especially Puerto del Carmen don´t have more money spent on improving as some of them are now becoming extremely impassable and dangerous to walk on, especially when rain, or in the dark hours. For example between Panorama apartments and upwards towards the Las Vistas and Ocean Lanzamar routes?!

I remember it when it had the Artisan workshops. It was a “Place of Tourist interest then!!!!
