María José is a shopkeeper in Vélez-Málaga who doesn’t take kindly to people trying to rob her of her day’s takings. Two hooded men burst in and demanded money…
However, when she produced a large knife used for cutting up watermelons and pumpkins, they changed their minds and ran off.
The incident took place Monday evening on Calle Travesía del Río, which is in the centre of Vélez-Málaga.
The two young Spanish men (their accents were not foreign) weren’t carrying any weapons, relying on the implied violence behind their demands. So when she brandished the knife, they decided that the numerical odds in their favour were not enough.
As soon as they left she phoned 061 (the number for the Policía Nacional) and a patrol almost immediately turned up, but they were unable to track down the intimidated villains.
Apparently, the owners of a nearby cafeteria had their suspicions aroused by the behaviour of the two men moment before they walked into María José’s greengrocer’s. When the robbers ran off, the went straight around to her shop to see if she was alright. She was a bit shaken but OK.
The moral of the story is, if you don’t want to end up a vegetable, then don’t cross Mary the Greengrocer.
