Almuñécar fire personnel had to tackle a hill fire above Tarmay Wednesday evening, next to the A-7 junction.
Around 2,500 sq/m of mainland shrub went up in the area known as the Loma del Gato before it was finally controlled and put out, well into the night.
The reason that it took so long was that they were called out twice: the first time round it was quickly dealt with and the crew returned to the fire station but owing to the presence of PVC irrigation tubes, the fire broke out again. The second time round was trickier owing to the black, toxic smoke.
Besides the Almuñécar fire service and the municipal police, Infoca also helped out in the first fire.
