A young man managed to shoot himself with his own speargun whilst diving off a Castell de Ferro beach.
The 20-year-old victim had been snorkelling off Playa La Rijana on the morning of the 15th when the accident occurred.
The weapon went off by mistake impaling his hand. The lifeguards on duty pulled him into their dingy and contacted 112.
The emergency-call centre contacted the larger, Carchuna lifeguard post to collect him from the nearby beach and take him to Calahonda by sea, where medical staff decided that rather than possibly damaging his hand further by removing the spear, they secured the spear and his arm to prevent further damage before transferring him by ambulance to Hospital Santa Ana in Motril.
There was a similar accident back in 2016 but in Mexico when 38-year-old man shot himself in the face. The spear actually pierced his skull making its extraction very complicated later in hospital.
