Looking Back: Peña Escrita

Here’s another article from ten years back, this time dealing with the Peña Escrita mountain park in the municipality of Almuñécar.

Back in 2009 money was very tight, thanks to the onset of the economic crisis so when the then Mayor decided to spend nearly half a million euros from a Central Government grant on the mountain park, opposition parties had a field day.

The park, which is closed down now, was an improvised zoo complete with a tiger, lions, a hippo and huge running costs. It was also illegal because the park didn’t have a licence to keep such animals and lacked trained personnel for this task – town-hall workmen looked after the large cats until one nearly devoured a gardener’s arm whilst feeding it.

The park started off life as simply a mountain park with only natural wildlife for this area there, such as mountain goats and deer. It also had a restaurant, log cabins to rent, horse stables and a swimming pool.

At one point the Mayor even purchased a 4×4 bus to ferry people up there, given the access road which was only a dirt track in the beginning.

Anyway, we leave you to have a peek at what was troubling Almuñécar back in May 2009 – just click on the link at the beginning of this article.

Probably for the better that the animal park was shut down. But it’s a pity that the area is completely inaccessible now. Does anybody know if rhere are any plans for it?
