Brexit is an earthquake not just for the British in the UK and here in Spain, but also for Costa Tropical fruit & veg exports.
At the moment, it takes about 48 hours from the time that the cherry tomatoes grown here are picked until they end up on UK shop shelves. That is all going to change… for the worse.
It is precisely that short turn around that allows the Costa Tropical to compete with Morocco, whose products are much cheaper.
The Costa Tropical exports horticultural produce for the tune of some 38.15m euros to the UK. Cherry tomatoes accounts for 14.5m euros of that total, followed by potatoes (10m euros) and cucumbers (5.9m euros).
Britain also imports 2.3m euros in avocados and 2.2m euros in green/red peppers and just over 1m in asparagus.
But we should speak of the whole of the province, as the asparagus comes from Huétor Tájar whose exports to the UK have grown by 786% in the last year.
If Dover becomes a lunatic asylum as a result of a Hard Brexit, then everything is at risk. The problem is not only the possible outcome, but the uncertainty in the meantime – nobody can take contigency steps.

Don’t put words in my mouth. I do not defend David Cameron. I simple point out the UK would not have had a referendum if “Brussels” had pretended to give ground, rather than laugh and say …off.
I think BOTH sides are at fault.
Did the Costa Tropical get a vote in the “Trade Deal” with the UK?…No because it has not happened. All “Brussels” were interested in was the divorce bill and by betting the UK would back down have bet all or nothing against a “No deal Brexit”. So if it goes wrong do not JUST blame the UK.
As usual this article talks as if its all down to the UK, what about the EU side in Brussels? They could have listened to the David Cameron when he asked for compromise but no. then they could have worked on a trade deal but no they insisted on the divorce bill first. It takes two side to make a deal.
This article talks about how it affects the Costa Tropical… which didn’t get the chance to vote in the Referendum.
By the way, you’re the first person that I have come across that actually defends David Cameron, on either side of the Brexit debate.
