With the national elections being decided upon this Sunday night, soon attention will turn to the European and Local Elections in next month.
Here on the Costa Tropical the traditional vying by two main parties, (PSOE and PP) has disappeared under a deluge of new parties.
To give you an idea, there are seven parties competing in Almuñécar, ten in Motril and six in Salobreña. All along the coast the municipal elections will give birth to coalitions of between two and three parties in order to set up a viable governing majority.
As for the General Elections, the socialists and conservatives have alternated in the seat of power for nearly 40 years – a perfect bipartisan arrangement, but this year, instead of a competition between two parties, it will be a competition between two political blocks; a left-wing one (PSOE + UP + a regional party from the Basque Lands or Cataluña) and a right-wing one (PP + Ciudadanos + Vox).
As they say in Spanish, “España va al camino de Italia;” in other words, we’re on the slippery road to the Italianisation of the Spanish political system.
