Motril Chiringuito Repossessed

MOT Chiringuito OleajeChiringuito Oleaje on Playa Granada in Motril was built on publicly owned land; a plot of some 1,300 sq/m after the land was leased to private hands in 2011.

The lease was to be for 20 years during which time the private company was to pay a monthly rent of 1,300 euros. Accordingly, the chiringuito opened in 2013 but that is about to change.

The Town Hall is taking it back because the private company has fallen behind with the land rental.

According to the Councillor for the Economy, Francisco Sánchez-Cantalejo, the chiringuito has run up a debt for some 150,000 euros. Consequently the lease will be officially revoked at the next Plenary Meeting of the Town Council.

The existing law states that in such cases the land has to be handed back exactly as it was; i.e., without the building on it, but the councillor feels that it would not be worth their while for the chiringuito owner to demolish it as it would cost a lot of money.
