Paseo Work Defended

The Secretary General for the PP in Almuñécar, Manuel Pérez, has defended the work being carried out on the Paseo del Altillo.

He says that the surveyor reports clearly support the fact that the present Town Council has had to rectify the “botched” projects belonging to the previous administration, as has also been  the case of the Municipal Market.

The reports show that rain and irrigation water is not draining on the upper paseo because the pipes have insufficient inclination and are too narrow. The connection between paseo drainage and the main drainage system is also blocked.

“We saw this with the Municipal Market, which was hurriedly built to be in time for the 1986 elections and now it has to be pulled down because of just how botched it was,” he explained, adding, “and now we have the Paseo de Altillo, which was three years under construction leaving the town paralysed and many nearby businesses ruined, not to mention the loss in tourism because holidaymakers chose to go elsewhere because of it.”

Lastly, the engineering report found that the parking has a roof thickness of just 70cm of concrete laid onto a metal framework, on top of which the cobbled road runs. The water accumulates and cannot drain away effectively. The flowerbeds leak because the waterproof bases have become infiltrated by roots. The excess water is soaked up by the gravel under the cobble stones and puddles form.

Manuel Pérez went on to defend the double-lane solution presently under construction saying that Benavides’s project had left the paseo with a labyrinth of flower beds where it is impossible for the Semana Santa thrones to pass. He says that the area has never recovered economically with most of the banks moving to the Avenida de Andalucia.

Editorial comment: Councillor Pérez’s choice of words “se le hace ver el plumero” in other words, the Mayor’s ulterior motive for this project is connected with the Semana Santa processions. This does not detract from the fact that the Paseo del Altillo is certainly a botch job.
