A Den of Rubbish

Four refuse lorries were needed to remove nearly 10 tonnes of rubbish from a Granada flat, whose owner suffers from Diogenes Syndrome.

The man, who lives in the Chana area of the city, offered no resistance to the removal of the rubbish.

Six workers and two drivers from the municipal rubbish-collection company, Inagra, were needed to removed the rubbish and disinfect the flat thoroughly, which lasted from 08.00h to 17.30h.

His neighbours had complained repeatedly to the City Hall about the stench from the rubbish that the man took to his flat every day. In other words, it was not only his own rubbish, but any rubbish he could find on his walks.

The rubbish, composing mostly of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, old clothes, pieces of wood, was literally stacked to the ceiling in most of the rooms. The refuse-collectors and neighbours were at a loss to think were he found space to sleep.
