Vélez-Málaga has been suffering a bout of vandalism and even arson; the latest incident was when a bar was set alight in the early hours of one morning.
According to the municipal police, the fire broke out around 03.00h on the Saturday the 17th on Calle San Francisco in the town centre. Although the fire was in the entrance, it caused extensive damage to Bar San Francisco.
One neighbour, who lives in a flat above the bar, had to be temporarily evacuated whilst the fire service put the fire out.
So far this year the town has suffered 72,000 euros in damages owing to vandals setting rubbish hoppers and roller bins alight, while vandalism in general costs the municipal coffers around a million euros every year, according to the Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer (PSOE).
