Ron Montero Fire Trial

Rum Montero packing OnLAfter several postponements, the trial concerning the explosion and fire at the Ron Montero distillery in Motril began yesterday at the local law courts.

The proceedings, which are expected to conclude on Friday, began with statements from witnesses and the report from the regional, work inspector.

This work-place accident took place in July 2014 and resulted in three workers being seriously injured by the explosion, one of whom later died from his injuries on the burns ward of the provincial hospital.

The hearing has already been postponed twice. Back in April, for instance, the presiding judge received new documental evidence, who then gave both parties time to study these new reports, and fixed a date for the next session in June.

The defendants are the then administrator of the distillery, Andrea M.T. and the Work Safety Officer. The Public Prosecutor is recommending a 3-year-6-month, prison sentence for each of them for negligent homicide and a work-safety breach. He also calls for them to be barred from working in their respective professions during three years, as well as nearly two million in compensation.
