Salvador Fernández Marín, the Mayor of El Borge in the Axarquía (Málaga), was found dead on his family’s farm.
His body was found hanging from a tree, Monday the 5th; there were no signs of violence so circumstances point to suicide.
Sr. Fernández, who had been the socialist mayor of EL Borge since 2011, was 47-years old and married with one son – his birthday would have been today, the 7th.
Both the provincial HQ of the socialists (PSOE) and the Prime Minister of the Junta de Andalucía have expressed their condolences for their fellow party member.
After the body was found, the Guardia Civil were called in together with the coroner who signed the death certificate so that the Mayor’s remains could be taken to the Instituto de Medicina Legal for an autopsy, which confirmed death through strangulation (hanging).
The funeral service was held yesterday afternoon with so many people present at the church that some people had to follow the service from outside.
The Mayor had been working in the morning in the Town Hall on the day of his death and all his colleagues said that there was nothing out of the ordinary in his behaviour that morning.
His friends and neighbours could not understand how this had happened as he was a friendly man who got on with everybody and was well liked within the community.
