More Immigrants Than Ever

MOT rescued Immigrants OnLThe number of immigrants being rescued out at sea and brought into Motril Port this summer reached 4,638. This figure is four times higher than the same period last year (1,165) and nearly six times higher than the year before that.

As far as October so far several hundred new arrivals have been processed through the port, so it is no wonder that the Temporary Holding Centre in the port is hopelessly inadequate for the task.

Until the end of August the Motril Sports Facility was used to house incoming immigrants, something both criticised by the NGOs and the police union for the Policía Nacional, whose task it was to guard the premises. After that they were moved to the tent city within the port, but with the end of summer rains they become flooded. Now the government is going to provide more solid modules for the task.

But Motril Port is just one of the ports along the coast of Andalucía bearing the strain because the figure for the whole of Spain is 43,467 arrivals, which is 206% up on last year. The International Migration Organisation, which belongs to the UN, points out that Spain is the European country that has received most immigrants this year.
