Coast Guard Honoured

This year’s commemoration of the loss of a Spanish fleet in La Herradura during a storm included a homage to the Servicio Marítimo de la Guardia Civil.

The First Councillor for the village, Juan José Ruiz Joya, and the Chairwoman of the Asociación de Amigos de La Herradura, Concepción Cacín, paid tribute during a dinner to conclude the day’s commemorative activities.

Teniente (Lieutenant) Javier Francisco Coca received a small sculpture in name of the maritime branch of the Guardia Civil, which is based in Motril Port.

Earlier in the day the Coast Guard launch, Rio Genil had dropped a wreath in the bay in homage to all those that have lost their lives at sea, especially the 5,000 souls lost when 25 of the 28 galleys in the fleet went down, smashed against the rocks, in 1562.

Finally, there is now a commemorative, pebble mosaic set into the surface of one of the streets in the old town that readers might like to check out.
