NRJ Cloud Burst 1st Oct 18 01A cloudburst over Nerja yesterday afternoon saturated the town in less than a quarter of an hour. The heavy rain was accompanied by hailstones.

The downpour, which arrived around 17.30h, hit the centre of the town, flushing rainwater down Almirante Ferrandis, Pintada, Carmen and across the Balcón de Europa.

The steps on Playa Burriana were converted into waterfalls as 15 litres per square metre fell in as many minutes.

Manhole covers were lifted by the force of the water and water spewed out, both down on Burriana and in the centre of town. The high-school sports pavillion (IES Sierra Almijara) was also flooded out and required the fire service to pump out the flood water.

The Mayor, Rosa Arrabal (PSOE), said that there had been no reports of serious damage and the Chief of the Protección Civil, Manuel Valderrama, said that they had been lucky that it only lasted 15 minutes.
