ECO Distress FlareIt was at 01.15h on Sunday the 26th that a Norwegian yachtsman started firing distress flares after his boat sank off Playa El Pozuelo in Albuñol.

Several locals saw the flares who then alerted the emergency number 112. Immediately, the Guardia Civil Maritime Rescue were turfed out and dispatched to the area.

Even though the flares had long since stopped the patrol boat reached the coordinates given and found a man rowing a small dinghy.

He told them that after hearing and feeling a blow to the hull, the sailing craft began to sink, with it sinking below the waves within an hour, despite his efforts to pump out the water flooding in.

At this point he abandoned ship in the small dingy and began sending up distress flares.

Editorial comment: a couple of summers back a yacht crew got into trouble not far from land and sent up distress rockets. Unfortunately, they were so close to the coast that they set off a small mountain-brush fire.
