A Plenary Meeting of the Motril Town Council unanimously approved a motion concerning the disposal of greenhouse plastic.
Simultaneously they approved a motion to request funds from the PFEA (Programa de Fomento de Empleo Agrario) for the maintenance of the beaches.
The Councillor for The Environment, Antonio Escámez, explained that since 2012, plastic waste (including that from greenhouses) is considered ‘not municipal;’ thus its disposal is not a local responsibility.
“The Junta de Andalucía awarded the contract to Cicloagro, which is a non-profit organisation made up of plastic producers, which was to organise the collection and recycling,” explained the councillor.
However, in March Cicloagro announced that it was folding and since then there is no system in place. This is further exasperated by the low price of recycled plastic.
The end result is that nobody is collecting the used plastic and it is becoming an eyesore.
For the above reason the Town Council has approached the Central Government, urging it to set up a national system for the collection and recycling for this kind of waste.
The second motion, as mentioned above, concerned beach maintenance, funded through a special PFEA grant, making up the majority of the beach-maintenance budget. The said budget is nearly 120,000 euros, made up of 107.416 from the Central Government and 7,900 from the Town Hall’s own coffers.
