The Defence Ministry has formally ceded the EVA-9 Air base in Motril to the Interior Ministry for it to be made into an immigrant holding centre.
The alteration work, costing 3m euros, has already been awarded to a construction company and work should have commenced by the time that you read this.
The new centre will hold 500 immigrants on a temporary basis (72 hours), whilst they are processed for deportation or residency. The port facilities where these immigrants were held has long been overwhelmed by the flood of illegal immigrants.
This move has not been without controversy as both Motril residents and ONGs have been against this, considering it unsuitable for different reasons.
