Excursion: Güéjar Sierra

GRA Restaurante MaitenaIf you don’t mind a drive and fancy a good meal in a special setting and a stroll to walk it off, then Restaurante Maitena near Güéjar Sierra will interest you.

Restaurante Maitena is an old station house on the Granada-Sierra Nevada, narrow-gauge, electric railway. The line inaugurated in 1925 and was shut down in 1974. After remaining closed for many years it was turned into a restaurant, which despite being ‘out in the sticks,’ is tremendously popular, both for its cuisine and its setting.

Keen hikers and railway enthusiasts are drawn there. The old station house lies at the start of a 6-km walk, complete with tunnels and a preserved sample of the original track, all running just above a river.

The restaurant has both inside and terrace seating, and in the summer, a lower dining area – a sort of chambao arrangement – right next to a large natural pool in the river, where the kids can bathe whilst you enjoy your after-meal coffee.

So there you have it: excellent food, a good quality-to-price ratio, an enjoyable walk, a drive with spectacular views – a splendid day out.

You must make a booking if you don’t want to be disappointed.
