Fried-Egg Eating Competition

PEA Fried Egg CompetitionThe Órgiva Fiestas at the beginning of last month went well and one reason was probably the novelty of the Concurso Internacional de Comedores de Huevos Fritos,. to mention just one activity.

Yes, it was an international, fried-egg competition, which, as you might know, had just a little to do with the good folk of Órigiva having the nickname of Hueveros (Egg Dealers).

Over 20 competitors, from many different parts of the province, took part at fried-egg chomping against the clock: eat as many as you can in five minutes.

And the winner was one Antonio Reche from the town of Peligros… there is a little bit of irony there as eating 18 fried eggs, as he did, could be described by his doctor as peligroso.

And in second place, showing that the lasses could knock ‘em back as well, was Julia Domínguez, who munched her glorious way through 13 startled fried eggs.

To really get their cholestrol levels rocking they both won a leg of cured ham (jamón Serrano) and a trophy.

The fiestas up there are really worth a visit because of the crazy competitions, such as the High-Heel Race, where plenty of male competitors had a chance to break their own eggs…

But it wasn’t all about eggs as the local fiestas finished off with the Concurso Internacional de Migas down in the area known as Río Chico. Thousands of people turned up for this – less two bloated fried-egg champions, no doubt to try the turn out of almost 100 competitors. Cash prizes, raffles and dancing rounded off the event.
