A fugative from the French police was arrested on a hippy commune in Cáñar (Beneficio de Cáñar), which is on a track between Órgiva and Cañar.
The 23-year-old man was wanted for an alleged murder in France. At the moment of his arrested the police found the mobile phone of the victim on him.
But he wasn’t the only one arrested, because the Guardia Civil hauled away a total of 24 residents of he commune after finding 2,320 marihuana plants distributed in numerous small plantations.
The Guardia Civil hadn’t gone to the commune to find the man but to follow up a case of sexual assault against a tourist allegedly carried out by a small group of persons from the said commune. It was whilst they were checking the ID’s of the residents that they came across the man – their cross check against his ID brought up a red flag.
Another offence committed by the commune residents was the hijacking of irrigation water for their own illegal plantation. But the charges are many, amongst them, illegal camping, posssession of undocumented pets and illegal human-waste disposal.
