It really needs to rain and rain properly. We’ve seen promising skies, thunder, lightening and even a smattering of raindrops. However, the countryside needs sustained rainfall over weeks.
Everyone is pointing towards the reservoirs, which are receding faster than Donald Trump’s hairline. But the farmers, particularly in the Río Verde area are pointing towards their trees. They are saying that subtropical fruit produce will be down by 50% in 2017 if the skies don’t burst open in the very near future.
Why the pessimism? Well, it’s at this time of year that the farmers water their produce more than ever, to ‘fatten up’ the fruit and bring on the ripening process ready for picking. If the water isn’t available for this, then they believe it will be as bad, if not worse, than the 2010 season.
Normally at this point we would be quoting litros por metros cuadrados and all that boring, technical rubbish… but let’s face it, we desperately need some persistent heavy rain and we need it sooner rather than later. Let’s face it, a Costa Tropical where tropical fruit is harder to find than an honest politician, is not a nice thought.
