Rivers are supposed to flow into reservoirs for later use but this late spring, reservoirs are being emptied to keep rivers alive in the interior of Spain.
The two reservoirs that feed Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Mancha), El Vicario and Torre de Abraham, are emptying out water to save the ecosystems of Río Bullaque and Río Guadiana.
And we’re not talking about a trickle, either. In the case of Torre de Abraham, it is spilling out 200 litres per second. The other one is doing it at 75 litres per sec. The trouble is that these two reservoirs stand at only 40% even before the summer begins.
Furthermore, this measure will last throughout the summer to guarantee the ‘ecological flow’ of the said rivers to avoid ‘hydraulic stress;’ all the fishes and riverbank life dying.
Even so, the Head of the Guadiana Water Board, Timoteo Perea, assures that human consumption supply is guaranteed this year and the next, and no water restrictions are expected. Quite another thing is the irrigation supply for arable land…
