Road Subsidence Repairs

MOT Car down hole 02 OnLThe Motril Town Hall surveyor and maintenance workers have been inspecting the collapsed road surface over the Barranco de la Brujas in the north east of the town.

They’re working on the idea that a broken water pipe, originally laid in 2004 might have eroded sand from under the road surface.

The Councillor for Urban Development, Antonio Escámez, has stated that the repair work will be footed by the Town Hall, as well as repairs to the van that the hole ‘half swallowed.’

“We’re still not 100% sure, but we believe that the water that has been leaking from the pipe has been softening the earth, little by little, until it finally collapsed,” explained the said councillor.

He added that Aguas y Servicios, will actually carry out the repair work on the pipes and that the Municipal Maintenance Department will fill the space in again afterwards, as well as replace the paved surface on top.

Finally, the councillor pointed out that many of the water pipes that run under Motril were laid in the 50’s and that he wouldn’t rule out further incidents of the kind in the future, however unlikely.

The incident took place on Calle Pablo Coronado (Barrio de Las Angustias) on the evening of the 29th of January as the driver was manoeuvering to park his vehicle in his garage on the other side of the said road surface.
