Tablate Bridge Decision

AND Puenta Tablate OnLIt looks like bungee jumping from the Tablate bridge on the A-348 between the A-44 Autovia and Lanjarón will be effectively forbidden as a result of the fatal accident there.

Although there is no legislation that governs this adventure sport in force in Andalucia – or in any other region of Spain, for that matter – the Junta, who own the bridge, has placed so many restrictions on using it for this purpose that it is impossible to actually jump from there without breaking at least one of them.

In the Province of Granada there are 14 adventure-sport companies that offer puenting excursions; i.e., bungee jumping off the side of bridges. The majority consider that the best bridge for it is precisely the Tablate one.

“We’re not talking about a veto on using the bridge,” said the Provincial Delegate the Ministry of Public Works, Mariela Fernández, “but about a non-authorized use [of the structure] because Tablate [bridge] is public property and therefore cannot be used for commercial purposes for private financial gain.”

For the present, bungee jumpers are only being warned that they can’t do it from there but after an ‘informative period,’ fining could begin.

In the meantime, the case of the accidental death of Kleyo de Abreu on this bridge is still going through the law courts. The adventure company involved has called for a accident-scene reconstruction as they consider that the eyewitness reports are contradictory.
