Three elderly men in their 70’s were questioned by the Policía Local in Ronda de Triana (Sevilla) for having made improper suggestions to a young woman.
The incident occurred at the end of last month when the police received calls from locals to complain that a young woman was being harrassed. Once at the scene, they located the victim, a woman in her 20’s, who explained that the men sitting on a bench had verbally harassed her.
She gave details of how when she had passed in front of them they had made obscene observations about her body, her clothes, even suggesting that she should wear less. When she confronted them, according to the victim, they became aggressive and threatened to kill her.
The men, on the other hand, upon questioning, explained that they had only piropeado (complimented her in a ribald manner). However, witnesses confirmed the victim’s version.
The men, after giving their statements, were allowed to go free pending an appearance before a magistrate.
Editorial comment: Even as late as the early 80’s it was considered almost normal for an elderly man to make improper comments to girls, some barely into puberty. Whilst they might be admonished as viejos verdes by adult-women passersby, adult men would have probably just smiled… unless the victim was their daughter, of course.
