You might have noticed that the sewage-treatment plant in Nerja is not exactly a hive of activity; that’s because it’s dead in the water.
Well, it’s not exactly dead; it’s more splashing around but not getting anywhere, thanks to a lack of funds and other causes.
Getting all the relevant permits from the different administrations, including the Nerja Town Hall is proving to be the usual soul-destroying bureaucratic nightmare, allegedly.
The situation is that the project is virtually finished… and on time; i.e., the completion date is June, but the Town Hall is proving to be an obstacle, according to the Ministry of the Environment concerning the required licence.
On top of that, the building group, Isolux-Corsán-Corviam, is apparently suffering financial problems. Recent news put the group’s debts at 4,500m euros.
According to the Mayor, Rosa Arrabal, the Town Hall has provided all the requested permits and that she is concerned about the company’s financial situation.
So summing up, the plant is 74% complete; the Ministry says the Town Hall isn’t supplying the necessary permission for the plant’s completion; the Town Hall replies that it has provided all requested permits and… the company in the meantime has serious financial issues.
Result: the sewage plant probably won’t be finished for this summer, meaning that its own beaches and those of its neighbours, depending on the currents, will sport traditional adornments.
