Mistreated Pony & Mare

SPN beaten Pony OnLIn June 2012 the Guardia Civil turned up on a farm in La Arboleja in Murcia and found a pony and a mare in a lamentable state.

They were lacking water, had ulcers on their legs and backs, scabs on their heads and covered in scabies. The owner was nowhere to be seen but even so, he was soon found and charged with continued cruelty to animals.

The owner of the animal is accused of making the pony pull an overloaded cart, making the mare pull a metal cart that caused her injuries to her back legs and on one occasion beat the pony brutally after it fell to ground in order to force it to stand.

Neither of the animals had any veterinary documentation and were constantly mistreated. Finally, a local vet who had seen the state of the creatures for himself, denounced the owner to the police.

The man has seen been sentenced to 8-months’ imprisonment, which is an automatic suspended sentence and three years being banned from owning an animal.

In the meantime, both equines are being looked after by the Agarrofet animal association in Tarragona, whose intention it to restore them both to good health. Unfortunately, the pony will never recover its sight in one of its eyes after it was beaten by the man around the head.
