Light-Fingered Ref?

A referee in Galicia in northern Spain was allegedly caught stealing a visiting-team player’s wallet from the changing rooms. He denies it.

Now the ironic thing is that the Guardia Civil were called in at the end of the match to take a statement from the referee… who is also a Guardia Civil policeman himself.

The policeman, from Monforte, was refereeing a game between Boicar Auto and Atlético A Peroxa. When halftime came, several witnesses saw the Ref entering the changing rooms, taking advantage of all the players being out on the pitch.

However, both teams were aware that this sort of thing had happened before during matches where this particular referee was involved. This is why, upon discovering the missing money, they phoned  the Guardia Civil.

The suspect allegedly got rid of the damning evidence amongst some overgrown weeds near the pitch, once he had removed the 100 euros contained in it.

In the end, he returned the money to its rightful owner, who decided not to press charges.

However, the following day he denied to a local paper that he had even entered the changing rooms, much less lifted somebody’s wallet.

Upon being asked why he had handed over 100 euros to the said player, he said that his superiors had advised him to do it, to avoid going before a magistrate.
