Cataluña Counts

FP Albert RiveraYou might ask what the Catalan elections have to do with the Costa Tropical; the answer is that what happened there affects the whole of Spain.

With the regional elections results in, the Catalan independence movement fell short of their aim of obtaining a large enough percentage of the votes to proclaim a unilateral declaration of independence.

Yes, they won the elections but not by enough, so the economic nightmare for both a truncated Spain and an independent Cataluña, heavily indebted and in turmoil over where it stands with the Euro and the EU, has passed.

The real winners were the new centre-right party, Ciudadanos, who led the anti-independence movement, sucking votes from the PP, who had hoped to capitalize on their scare campaign and strengthen their position for the General Elections in December.

Ciudadanos Party leader, Albert Rivera, claimed in his post election speech that the domination of Spanish politics by the two main parties, PP and PSOE has now come to an end, as Ciudadanos almost pulled more votes than the PP and PSOE put together.

So, how did it affect us on the Costa Tropical? Well, we woke up this morning to find that the catastrophic, political asteroid had missed us by a hair’s breath, so life can go on as normal, with barely anybody realising that there was ever any danger to our lives on the Costa Tropical.
