The Almuñécar, socialist opposition party has complained that street cleaning and rubbish collections have been lax in the municipality so far this summer.
They say that although the population of Almuñécar quadruples, as does the amount of rubbish generated, this should not be an excuse for letting Almuñécar and La Herradura present a negative image before visitors
“We’re a tourist town and need to spoil tourists and take maximum care over what image we project,” said Councillor Pablo Ruiz Díaz, adding that “many” visitors and residents had remarked on the lack of cleanliness.
“We have walked around back streets and beaches in Almuñécar and La Herraduraa and have discovered that they are right; there are areas that leave much to be desire,” he said.
One such place is the bridge over Río Seco, next to Las Góndolas, where locals have complained about pools of stagnant water, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The Councillor took pains to point out that his complaints were not aimed at the cleaning operators but at the Town Hall.
To tackle the problem, the PSOE suggests taking on more staff over the summer.
